The UK Environment Agency on Saturday issued several flood alerts, flood warnings and severe flood warnings - the latter meaning that there is a danger of loss of life due to flooding in those areas. Some areas were being evacuated in the Lancashire area after water breached flood barriers following torrential rains. The agency on Friday warned communities in the north of England of potential "significant flooding" through Christmas night and into Boxing Day. "The rain will fall on areas where the ground is already saturated and river levels are high," the agency said in a press release. Paul Mustow, Deputy Director in Flood and Coastal Risk Management at the Environment Agency, urged residents to remain vigilant or follow @EnvAgency and #floodaware on Twitter for the latest flood updates. "We also want to remind people never to drive through flood water: just 30cm (12 inches) of flowing water is enough to move your car," Mustow cautioned. People in some towns have been asked to … [Read more...] about Floods dampen seasonal cheer in England, Scotland and Wales
The matches which involved England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales were all played in November around Remembrance Sunday, when Britain pays its respects to the victims of World War I and II. In its judgment fining England 45,000 Swiss francs ($44,000 / 42,000 euros), the world governing body for soccer said the offense was a "display of a political symbol" on players' shirts and around the stadium during the match against Scotland. Part of the fine also covered crowd misconduct. "Keeping in mind that the rules need to be applied in a neutral and fair manner across FIFA's 211-member associations, the display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited," Claudio Sulser, head of FIFA's disciplinary committee said. "In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else." "We note the decision by the FIFA disciplinary committee which we intend to appeal," the English FA commented via social media. "As a first step we have written to … [Read more...] about England football association to appeal FIFA poppy fine
Yesterday, the government of Scotland unveiled figures showing that, were it an independent country, it would have achieved the second-highest reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in Western Europe over the past quarter century. The only country to beat it was Sweden. Of course, Scotland is not an independent country, and the actual country to come in second was the United Kingdom as a whole. But Scotland's emissions reductions were far higher than the rest of the country. While England, Wales and Northern Ireland reduced emissions by 33% between 1990 and 2014, Scotland saw reductions of almost 40%. The Scottish government, controlled by the pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP), was keen to trumpet the impressive figures. "Scotland is a world leader in tackling climate change, and these figures reaffirm that Scotland continues to outperform the rest of the UK as a whole and punch above its weight in international efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions," declared Environment … [Read more...] about Brexit raises questions on Scotland’s role as environmental champion
Speaking to her Scottish National Party (SNP) assembly in Aberdeen on Saturday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said that a refusal by Prime Minister Theresa May and the Westminster government to discuss a second referendum on independence would "shatter beyond repair" the United Kingdom's constitutional structure. Sturgeon expects to be authorized on Wednesday by the devolved Scottish parliament to seek terms for a new secession vote. She wants it to be held once Brexit terms are clear but before Britain leaves the European Union. "To stand in defiance of (Scottish parliamentary authorization) would be for the prime minister to shatter beyond repair any notion of the UK as a respectful partnership of equals," Sturgeon said. Earlier this week, May said that "now is not the time" for a new choice on independence. Sturgeon needs approval from the Westminster parliament for a referendum to be legally binding. "(May) has time to think again and I hope she does. If her concern is timing … [Read more...] about Scotland’s Sturgeon warns of constitutional crisis over second independence vote
