Many are are asking if the money-losing company - now the most valuable automaker in the US - is on the path to becoming a sustainable business that justifies its high stock market valuation? Tesla starts Model 3 production with the target of making 1,500 sedans in September and 20,000 in December. It hopes to produce 500,000 vehicles next year, before reaching a target of one million in 2020 - almost as many as the total number of electric vehicles sold worldwide as recently as 2015. "This is a big ‘if' and Musk/Tesla-style hyperbole," Michelle Krebs, Executive Analyst at Cox Automotive's Autotrader in Detroit, told DW. Tesla had sold 186,000 electric cars as of December 2016. Would-be customers have put down deposits on more than 400,000 Model 3s. Price before beauty? The ghost of plagiarism has come back to haunt the literary scene in Germany once again. The young Berlin author Helene Hegemann, who turned 18 last weekend, recently admitted to lifting long passages by another author. But she wasn't the first. Last December, rumors circulated in the German press that Hamburg director Fatih Akin had copied sections of Alexander Wall's novel "Hotel Monopol" for his film "Soul Kitchen." Then in January, writer Uwe Tellkamp was accused of borrowing from Jens Wonneberger for his bestseller "Der Turm" ("The Tower"). Britain's star author J.K. Rowling has also recently been taken to court for similarities between "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and a book by Adrian Jacobs. Copying has many names Indeed, literature always contains something borrowed: Every author is also a reader, Roland Koch, professor for creative writing at Siegen University, told Deutsche Welle. "Everything I read and perceive in my everyday life flows through me and … [Read more...] about Plagiarism debate irks authors who claim everything is derivative
At a historic summit hosted for the first time by Myanmar - formerly known as Burma - in its remote capital of Naypyidaw, the foreign ministers of the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) issued a joint statement on May 10 expressing "serious concerns" and the need for a peaceful resolution to "ongoing developments in the South China Sea." Although the statement failed to refer specifically to China, it was seen as an attempt to deescalate tensions in the region after Beijing had deployed a deep-water oil rig to territory near the Paracel Islands also claimed by Vietnam. Chinese and Vietnamese ships have since been involved in several collisions, with the two communist countries trading accusations of responsibility for aggravating the situation. Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, rejecting rival claims from Vietnam, the Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Brunei. In a DW interview Ernest Bower, the Sumitro Chair for Southeast Asia Studies at the … [Read more...] about China’s ‘aggressiveness’ is drawing ASEAN closer
The old and mighty Hambach Forest, an ancient woodlands in Germany that lies between the cities of Cologne and Aachen, has been an environmental battlefield for years. On one side, young activists living in trailers and tree houses are fighting to save the forest. On the other, Germany's second-largest electricity producer RWE is trying to clear it. And technically, they are allowed to do so. RWE bought the forest in the 1970s so that coal can be dug out of there at neighboring Hambach, Germany's largest open-pit lignite mine. But the highly coveted coal deposits lie beneath the 12,000-year-old forest, whose trees have been chopped down for decades to make space for coal diggers. Only a fourth of the original forest, which used to cover 5,500 hectares, is left. The open-pit lignite mine has even swallowed entire villages. Crossing the red line Now the battle is getting real, since RWE's diggers have crossed a sensitive spot for the very first time: The old A4 autobahn, which … [Read more...] about Clash in German forest as red line is crossed
