Paul Cook remains adamant Wigan Athletic do not want or need to sell Nick Powell or any of their crown jewels ahead of Wednesday night’s transfer deadline. Powell’s powerful performance in the FA Cup victory over West Ham at the weekend made national headlines, with pundits suggesting he could and should be playing at least one division higher. Cook admits his hands may be tied if a large offer was received. But he is hoping that is a scenario that doesn’t materialise. “There’s so many phone-calls in football now – between not just managers but also agents - you can’t say for sure whether there’s anything going on,” he told the Wigan Post. “All I can say is we don’t want to sell anybody, we’re not interested in selling anybody. “But you can’t ever say that you won’t. “As far as we’re concerned, it’s all about getting to Wednesday night, hopefully with our squad intact. … [Read more...] about No-one will ‘nick’ Powell, says Wigan Athletic chief

Paul Cook toasted his Wigan Athletic heroes after West Ham became the second Premier League team to be dumped out of this season’s FA Cup at the DW Stadium. The League One leaders were good value for their 2-0 victory over the Hammers, with Will Grigg scoring in each half to take him to half a dozen cup goals for the season - the top scorer in the competition. West Ham’s misery was compounded by the second-half sending-off of Arthur Masuaku for spitting at Nick Powell. But nothing could detract from the achievements of Latics - and their jubilant manager. “It’s been a great day for us as a club,” Cook acknowledged. “When you take on top-class opposition, with the atmosphere before the game, it makes it special. “We played well, and great credit to us for that. “I thought the game had a massive defining moment. “The sending-off was huge - in my opinion it altered course of the game. “I felt they started the second half a lot … [Read more...] about Cook lauds Wigan Athletic heroes after Hammers heroics
David Moyes admits his West Ham side will have to be on their guard this afternoon against a ‘good’ Wigan Athletic outfit who are capable of springing another FA Cup shock. Latics dumped fellow Premier League outfit Bournemouth out of the competition in the third round, and Moyes is well aware of the threat posed by Paul Cook’s men. “Wigan are a good side and play good football,” said Moyes. “It’ll be a tough game. “Paul Cook has done a fantastic job. But their priority will be to get back into the Championship and maybe the Premier League again one day.” Moyes then went a step further by suggesting Latics may be regretting their decision to prioritise the FA Cup five years ago, when they also suffered the drop from the top flight. “It’s a strange thing they won the FA Cup and were relegated five years ago,” continued Moyes. “If you look back and ask Wigan if they’d rather have won the cup or stayed in … [Read more...] about Moyes wary of Wigan Athletic threat
Our panel of experts bring you a unique insight into the goings-on at the DW Stadium... Martin Tarbuck: Only a few more days to go until the dreaded transfer window slams shut and my main concern is ensuring we keep our squad intact. Clutching rosary beads and praying that no desperadoes out there start throwing silly money towards our lovely players at the 11th hour. In recent years, we’ve been spoilt with a flurry of incomings and the odd angry outgoing (looking at you here – Yanic “The Snake” Wildschut!) but all’s fair in love, war and transfer dealings...so here’s hoping we have a quiet one. Signing 10 players on transfer deadline day is not a time for great excitement as some of our fans and even the club itself have been known to herald it as. It is a sign your football club is in a right state and you are just trying to get random bodies in as a last-ditch desperate attempt to bolster your squad to get promoted or stave off relegation. This … [Read more...] about The 12th Man: Hopefully no transfer window pain for Wigan Athletic!
This weekend’s FA Cup fourth-round tie between Wigan Athletic and West Ham will evoke memories of several recent and memorable Premier League encounters. And if Latics can reproduce the performance that did for fellow top-flight outfit Bournemouth in the last round, they have every chance of pulling off another shock. But would it actually be that much of a shock? While two divisions currently separate the two sides, they could well be competing on equal terms in the Championship next season. We know David Moyes will again make changes to his Hammers line-up, while Paul Cook will afford the competition maximum respect. Yes there were a few changes in the last round but, unlike in the League Cup and Checkatrade Trophy, it was a team sent out to win the game. Anyone thinking Wigan’s 2-2 draw in the first game against Bournemouth was a fluke would have been put right by the opening exchanges at the DW. “I bet Eddie Howe wishes one of his players would put a Wigan player … [Read more...] about Talking football: It’s Hammer time for Wigan Athletic!
“Put up or shut up” - that’s the message from Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook to any clubs considering a move for any of his star names. Saturday’s 3-1 victory at Plymouth means Latics are now five points clear at the top of League One with 19 matches to go. As well as popping up with goal number three, ‘Superman’ Dan Burn put in another imperious display at the back, with the likes of Nick Powell, Max Power and Sam Morsy also impressing. With just over a week to go before the transfer window slams shut, Latics fans will be keeping their fingers crossed all of the big-hitters stay put to help to finish the job of winning promotion. Cook, though, is taking a more pragmatic view. “I’m never worried about anything in football,” he told the Wigan Post. “If clubs want to come in for our players, they’re going to have to pay a lot of money to get them. “But players will come and go, like we saw with Lee Evans, and all you … [Read more...] about Cook ‘not worried’ about losing Wigan Athletic stars
Plymouth boss Derek Adams reckons Wigan Athletic should be playing one if not two divisions higher, despite running the League One leaders close at Home Park. The mid-table Pilgrims had gone into the game as the form team in the third tier, having won five and drawn three of their last eight games, and took an early lead through a Graham Carey penalty. However, Will Grigg levelled within two minutes, and further strikes from Gavin Massey, right on half-time, and Dan Burn at the three-quarter mark sent Latics five points clear at the summit. “I thought it was a good game,” assessed Adams. “There was a lot of good football between two very good sides. “We started the game very, grew into, and we scored obviously off the penalty kick. “That gave us the start we probably deserved. “Quickly after that, we lose a really poor goal. It goes through a lot of bodies and into the goal. “To lose a goal so quickly; that was hard to take. “We … [Read more...] about Wigan Athletic ‘far too good for League One’
